Compact Houses, Hamilton Hill

Small and Efficient.

Designed as an alternative to regular suburban housing, these two side by side prototypes for DevelopmentWA’s redevelopment of the former Hamilton Hill Senior High School site, are for accommodating small families on a block that is half the size of current subdivisions.

Built side by side on two 125sq.m micro lots next to a pocket park, they are a demonstration that providing well-designed, sustainable suburban housing can be a cost comparative option.

Based around five key concepts; sustainability, belonging, modernity, affordability and adaptability, they are 7.8 star energy rated.

Influenced by architect Alejandro Aravena who states that affordability means a building’s cost must comprise 70% structure & 30% finishes (most houses are the opposite way around), common materials & minimal finishes are used - owners can then apply their personality to them. Due to the entrenched market & construction approach in WA it ended up closer to a 50/50 ratio…but still an improvement on the status quo.

Rooms are simple but have generous connectivity to outdoor areas that take advantage of its location next to a large tuart tree & distant ocean views across the suburb.
