Curedale St Addition, Beaconsfield
Giving new life to an old cottage.

This house addition and renovation was about giving the client three things that most classic Fremantle limestone cottages lack:
1. Physical and visual connection to garden and the surrounding context.
2. Generous internal light, both sunny and ambient.
3. Thermal comfort through passive solar principles, greywater/rainwater collection and cross ventilation.

A link from the existing house became the main entry and brought visitors directly into the courtyard at the heart of the house where full height glazing allows the garden to be seen from different areas of the house.
The north facing garden and terrace was integrated into the house through an L shaped extension containing a lounge and kitchen. This extension wraps around a large frangipani tree. Existing bathrooms and laundry were renovated and beautiful terrazzo tiles repurposed.

Strict council view line requirements & a very tight budget meant a standard carport door was the only option. Otherwise… - pic by Basim Boulos
A softening of a space in ambient light or a warm, inviting spot with brighter creates comfortable options for the clients to hang out within an open, connected room.
The external look of the addition is modern whilst still reflecting context through roof line pitch and a sense of scale. Materials outside are hardwearing that will still allow the soft edges of a garden to begin infiltrating its space over time.
