The Letterbox

Dear Australia Post,

I am writing regarding the imminent removal of your red letterbox from the front of my house. I have lived here for over thirty years, first with my wife and now on my own. I am dismayed by your decision.

This small mailbox has history and a link to our community. Whilst not as popular as it once was, the fact that some locals still use it regularly – both young and old – gives our neighbourhood a sense of continuity. It gives me a sense of security and joy to see that mailbox being used. Just last week some school kids left two apples on top of it for the postman to eat.

Now, please bear with me a moment and this cranky old man will finish.

I live on my own since my wife died and I do not get out much anymore. It gets lonely at times, but I do okay. It may be corny, but that mailbox helps ease my loneliness in a small way, because people stop and I feel connected to them for even a short moment; Mums helping kids put in the letters on straining tippy toes; the comfort I feel when the mail van stops each evening to collect the letters.

To your business this box is but a minor irritant, but it makes a big difference to my life and I hope I speak for the quiet voices of others in our neighbourhood who wish to have it remain as a modest but significant touchstone of our place.

I do hope you change your mind about this. Thank you for your time.

Yours Sincerely

Edward (Teddy) Grey
