What? Park, White Gum Valley

The late Kai & car bay.

In memory of Dave’s beloved dog Kai, an abandoned car parking bay was illegally occupied and transformed into a quirky pocket park for people and dogs.

The initial plan was to make a substantial garden.

The initial plan was to make a substantial garden.

Kai lived in several places, but his final home was in Watkins Street. Next door is a disused car bay located 100m from the local primary school. He walked this street and visited the school regularly to steal lunches so turning this car bay into a tiny memorial park appealed as a great spot for kids, parents and most importantly dogs to momentarily enjoy.

It was named by a young girl called Delilah, who disappointingly exclaimed “What Park?” upon her initial inspection. A swing, grass and lots of plants were envisaged but half a metre of compacted builder’s rubble under the bitumen put an end to those ideas.

Less plants, more sculpture. The walls should gradually be covered in vines.

So, the design changed from a ‘grand’ garden to a series of small insertions; some natural, some sculptural, some practical. The highlight being a wonderfully whimsical installation created by local artist Madelaine Beech that both differentiates and enlivens the space to hopefully raise a smile or an eyebrow on anyone walking past.
